Pier 21
Oct 12th, 2009 | By Stories | Category: Halifax Stories, Visiting Halifax
Between 1928 and 1971, approximately 1.5 million immigrants, war brides, displaced people, evacuee children and Canadian military personnel passed through Pier 21, known informally as the ‘Gateway to Canada.’ Perhaps your relatives were among them. Perhaps not. Either way, the stories of all those who arrived, or left to fight in Europe, through the pier will are incredibly moving.
Whatever your interest in Pier 21, you’ll discover much history at the Immigration Museum now housed there. There are interactive exhibits, multimedia presentations and activities for all ages. If your interest includes researching your family’s entrance to Canada through the pier, visit the research center on the ground floor. Staff will assist you in finding passenger lists of arriving immigrants. There is no fee for their assistance, though there is a charge if you want a copy of a passenger list or a photograph of a ship.
Pier 21 also hosts a Café, Museum Gift Shop, and the 5000 square foot Ralph and Rose Chiodo Harbourside Gallery.
